Puma First Round

The Skate Series

By , About.com Guide

Puma's newest line of skate sneakers is the brand's answer to Nike's SB line.

Style

I love Puma First Rounds. They have a slight 70s style to them and a futuristic edge at the same time. Now, do they look like they would make great skate shoes? Honestly, no. The suede on these sneakers is not made to be beat into the ground without ruining the way they look. Nor is there enough support at the toe like Vans or old Airwalks to protect bruising when hitting or rubbing against the cement.

Comfort and Fit

Puma didn't take a serious approach with their First Round Skate series. Though their use of additional padding at the heel counter does a better job offering extra support than many other skate shoes - the soles don't offer enough grip to keep a rider on their wheels. The sneaker offers increased cushioning and stability via a raised cupsole midsole, but it's the resistance not offered by the outsole that makes the difference and Puma fails to deliver.

Design

Can Puma's First Rounds go up against Nike SB Blazers? In style, it's a toss up. In functionality, the Blazers win. How so? Nike Blazers have more of a gummy and rubbery sole. You can take a chunk out of it, drop it and it will bounce back like a rubber eraser hitting the pavement. If you do the same to the Puma's, the bounce won't be as great. Nike's soles are made to bounce back when a skater kicks a wall, while Puma's sneakers seem to just look good. Plus, Puma's initial selection of colorways is very shortcoming. Two out of 3 is not bad. The rifle green/black coffee shouldn't have made it into production. The bold blue/white colorway is the sure winner followed by the black/ribbon red.

Conclusion

Puma has started with a good base for their First Round Skate series in looks but not functionality. The sole needs attention and the suede needs to be thinner and lighter. These are bound to be improved. The Puma Clyde would make a better skate shoe. Keep your eyes peeled as Puma releases more interesting colorways and collaborations in the not so distant future.
