1. Clean the Surface First

If your sneakers are leather or vinyl, add some dishwashing soap to a wet sponge to remove all traces of dirt on the surface of your sneakers, without getting water in the inside. Keep all the scrubbing on the outside. Run the sponge over the soles, the toebox, and the heel. Skip this step if your sneakers are made of suede, cotton, or anything else.

If your sneakers are made of cotton, go to your local grocery store and ask if they carry Ritz dyes. They usually do in the same aisle that carries sewing kits and even socks. If you find a color that is an exact match of your shoes, then grab it or choose something else you may like to try. Then go home and soak the shoes in bleach for about an hour.

Once you reach a lighter shade of color, and it does not have to be consistent in whiteness as some parts could turn yellow, drop the sneakers into the dye according to the instructions on the box. Let them dry outside overnight. If your sneakers are already white with stains, there is little you can do to rescue them. You can try bleaching them but you won’t like the results, unless you own a pair of Keds. Skip this step.
