Puma Reigns in Spain
I've been scanning the sneaker craze in Spain and discovered some interesting trends. Most Spanish kids seem unaffected by American culture. I've seen countless independent European sneaker brands being worn and the major sneaker brands here in Spain are less prevalent. The trend for those who are "in" is to wear any brand that is not a big name. Speaking of big names, Puma seems to be Spain's most popular "big" brand. Though the trend is not to wear big name sneaker brands, it is fairly evident the Puma brand has been excluded. Puma’s unique colorway offerings are certainly been worn more prominently on the street than any other big-name sneaker brand.
Spain could certainly be described as a very nationalistic country and being unique is the call on the street. Have you heard of the sneaker brand Air Gruppo? I hadn't either until I landed here. Here's a brand so underground that they don't even have a website, let alone retail outlets.
Spain is about being different and seeking out the obscure. Here, you won’t see two people wearing the same sneakers on the same block. Make that many blocks. Spain is way ahead of the rest and confirms my prediction of a brandless society where style speaks over anything else.
